How it started

This pickup started with 2 people (A and B). A and B had previously played frisbee together in Nanjing, China.

Before A left for Japan in June 2022, a mutual friend communicated with B and gave A B's wechat.

A arrived in July 2022, and met up with B in Yoyogi park to throw frisbee.

A said it was too far, over 1 hour train ride from home. He suggested "Kita-senju" to B because, there was a pleasant looking green area from the JR train window. B agreed.

too far.

In the Kita-senju Grassland

Upon the second meeting, A and B met at Kita-senju's Arakawa Hinodecho park. It was very green and spacious. It seemed perfect, however...

B said it would be more fun with more people. A suggested pinning a post on Xiaohongshu, the chinese social media platform, as well as Facebook, and Jimoti (a local japanese platform).

Along with sending posts on XHS and Facebook, A and B privately messaged some people. By late August, after a few miscommunications and ghostings, one tall man from France had begun to attend, as well as one late 20's Chinese lady who saw A's post on XHS. They met near a lone tree in the middle of a field which was very easy to spot.

A and B came to realize the French man did not like playing ultimate, but enjoyed throwing frisbees. He could throw multiple frisbees for hours. The late 20's lady had no previous experience with frisbee, but was convinced by her boyfriend to come.

She enjoyed the event so much, she posted about it on her XHS, where she had over 100 followers. She also helped A to adjust his post so that the Chinese sounded more natural.

The First Real Pickup

It was now mid-September, and the lady's post had gained the attention of a few followers. To our surprise, the very next week had 13 participants; quite a jump from only 3 the week before.

first pickup on sept 17 2022

With the exception of 2 experienced players, all of the new participants were newcomers.

This cohort enjoyed themselves and invited their friends. Despite being thrilled to have enough people to play pickups however, A and B learned quickly, with more people came more responsibilities...
